I'd say grey knights are a elite army that can hold their own in every phase of the game. Hobby wise, they are a smallish army, so you don't have to paint too many models. They do have a small range though only 3 kits needed to build the entire army. Game play wise, Greyknights are fairly simple since most units share the same or similar stats. Paint raised robe areas with Caliban Green, leaving the wash in the recesses. Highlight robes by painting with warpstone glow, ensuring that the paint is very thin. Apply several layers, gradually reapplying over the most raised areas to give it the highlight. Edge highlight all grey areas with Mechanicus Standard Grey, leaving wash in recesses. I think Grey Knights are definitely a good beginner faction. Grey Knights are generally straightforward to play and we don't have loads of complex rules or require stacking lots of buffs.
